Planning

Setting Tangible Goals for Practice

  • Many times, players come to practice without a specific intention, while the coach arrives with a practice plan that has certain goals in mind. As a player, it's important to write down what you want to achieve in each practice. Even though it may seem like just another practice without much significance, every practice actually matters.

  • What does this mean in practical terms? Let's say in your last game, you had a lot of turnovers. So, a great focus for practice would be to take better care of the ball. Make the simple plays instead of trying to hit home runs. It's hard to have intention in a game if you're not intentional in practice

  • Now, this doesn't mean that you won't make any turnovers. But when they happen, take a moment to understand why. Was it because of great defense or a lack of focus?

  • Your brain is like a big predictor that relies on past experiences. So, guide your brain through the process of taking care of the ball, just like you would guide a little puppy. With time, you'll see fewer turnovers.

  • Once you've achieved that, you can apply this Player Practice Plan to other skills on the court.

Basketball Application

1. Optimization Perspective:

- Optimization doesn't mean eliminating all negative emotions or physical states. It's about dealing with what's in front of you and understanding that sometimes the past can hold you back like an anchor stuck in the sand.

- Accepting occasional mental ruminations as a normal function of our brains, especially after tough moments like a disappointing game.

2. Dealing with Rumination as a Basketball Player:

- Metacognition: Allow yourself to sit with those emotions and let them guide you.

- Creating a Plan: Develop systems that stem from emotions. These systems can address various situations like recovering from a bad game or improving during the offseason.

- Systems are plans that originated from an emotion, leading to an action, and after success, they are recorded for future reference.

- Execution with CONSITENCY™️: Consistently follow through with the plan, especially after good performances when complacency is most likely to set in.

- Self-Reflection: Reflect on how the system is functioning or not functioning.

- Adjustment: Make necessary adjustments based on the system's effectiveness.

- Save for Future Use: Keep these plans ready for the next heightened emotional state or challenging situation.
