Hey Club!

I recently dropped a video of an exciting play during one of our games:

I’m all in on analyzing plays, good and bad. There’s SO much you can learn from them. And if you aren’t consistently improving and iterating on your performance, it becomes easy to get left behind.

That’s why today, I want to share what was going through my mind during and after that play.

For me, the main thing is understanding 2 things:

1. The psychology of the game
2. The objective data

The psychology of the game is my mindset.

  • am I prepared?

  • what mental pressure am I carrying?

  • what’s keeping me on track?

  • what’s getting me distracted?

Objective data takes the emotions out and looks at the facts. These are things like:

  • who's in foul trouble

  • what's the foul count

  • time on the clock

  • current score

  • shot clock status

All those things factor into exactly how you're going to execute a certain play and feed into knowing who can foul and who can't (drawing attention to the ref).

"Hey, they might foul me here. Watch his hands."

I think a lot of people go wrong in these types of situations because they get so focused on themselves, trying to score and not setting up the first play. If there's a screen-to-screener action, then in order to get yourself open, you need to screen. Sometimes guys won't screen, and they'll leak out early, not allowing them to be open.

And like you’ll see in the video, it's important to listen to your coach during a timeout. No ego.

He’s not tired from running up and down the court.

He can see things from a different perspective that you can't see during the game.

He has experience in these situations, and it’s important to trust him. This is where faith comes in. Not only faith in your abilities to execute, but also trusting that your coach can see at a higher level than you, while you’re in game mode.

All in all, there are lots of factors to take in while looking back and analyzing film. And this just scratches the surface. I’m diving more into studying film and basketball IQ in my new channel if you're ready to level up your game (made for the students of the game, not the fans!)

If you have comments or questions, hit reply. I want to hear from you, and I read every response. My goal is to continue building a great community where we all get better together.

I’m also giving out a free signed jersey to the first person who refers 50 people to this Consistency Club Newsletter. No strings attached! Here’s the link:

Keep it up guys,

Another great way to look at “objective data” is to look a layer deeper. I use WHOOP 4.0, one of my favorite health-focused wearables. And here’s a link for a free month if you’re interested: https://join.whoop.com/83DFA16B
